Basketball Drills for Beginners (Fun & Effective)

July 10, 2026

Young players do not need complicated drills — they need hundreds of touches wrapped in games they enjoy. These are the beginner basketball drills that earn their practice time, each with the one coaching cue that makes it work.

Ball-handling drills

Dribble tag: everyone dribbles inside a marked area while trying to tag other players — get tagged or lose your dribble and you do three crossovers to re-enter. Cue: eyes up, feel the ball instead of watching it.

Red light, green light: the classic, but dribbling. Green means dribble forward, red means stop and protect the ball, yellow means crossovers in place. Cue: low dribble on the stop — knee height keeps the ball safe.

Shooting drills

Form shooting from a knee: each player takes soft one-hand shots from close range, starting from one knee to isolate the arm. Cue: finish with fingers in the rim — hold the follow-through until the ball lands.

Around-the-rim layups: lines of two or three max, alternating right-hand and left-hand layups from each side. Cue: outside hand, inside knee — right hand and right knee up on the right side, then mirror it.

Passing drills

Partner passing ladder: pairs complete ten chest passes, ten bounce passes, and ten one-handed push passes, stepping back after each set. Cue: thumbs down on the follow-through for chest passes; the target is always the partner's hands.

Defense drills

Mirror slides: pairs face each other in a channel; one slides side to side, the other mirrors. Whistle swaps the leader. Cue: no crossed feet — push off the trailing leg and stay in the stance.

Build them into a practice

String these together — ball handling to open, stations of shooting and passing, mirror slides for defense, then a 3v3 game — and you have a full session. The free basketball practice plan template lays that structure out ready to print.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best basketball drill for beginners?

Dribble tag. It delivers hundreds of ball touches with eyes up, teaches ball protection under pressure, and kids ask to play it — which means maximum reps with zero nagging.

How do I teach a child to shoot with proper form?

Start close to the rim with one-hand form shooting, even from one knee. Build the habit of a high follow-through before adding distance — range comes from legs later; form comes first.

Should beginners practice left-handed layups?

Yes, from day one. Alternating hands feels awkward for a week and then becomes normal. Players who wait until they are older fight the habit for years.
