Flag Football Positions Explained (5v5 and 7v7)

July 10, 2026

Flag football strips the game down: no linemen crashing into each other, no special teams — just a handful of players who all touch the ball. But positions still matter, and where you put each kid changes everything. Here is what every spot does in the two most common formats, 5v5 and 7v7.

5v5 offense

The quarterback (QB) takes the snap and either throws or hands off — in most 5v5 leagues the QB cannot run past the line of scrimmage, so this spot needs your best decision-maker and thrower. The center (C) snaps the ball and immediately releases into a route, usually short over the middle. The remaining three are receivers (WR) — one or two wide, sometimes one in the backfield as a running back (RB) who takes handoffs and swing passes. Because everyone is eligible, every player runs routes on every play.

5v5 defense

Most 5v5 defenses play a 2-deep or 3-under zone. Two or three defenders cover short zones, one or two play deep safety, and — in leagues that allow it — one defender can rush the QB after starting seven yards off the line. The rusher's job is pressure, not violence: force a quick throw. Everyone else's job is the same: stay in your zone, watch the QB's eyes, and pull flags cleanly.

7v7 additions

With seven players you add a second true receiver or tight-end-style player on offense and gain real formation variety — trips, twins, and motion. On defense you typically run three deep and three or four underneath, plus an optional rusher. The reads are the same as 5v5; there are simply more bodies, so route spacing and zone discipline matter more.

Where to put each kid

Your calmest, most accurate thrower plays quarterback — arm strength matters less than decisions at this level. Reliable hands go to center, since that short middle route is the bail-out on every broken play. Your fastest players start at receiver and deep safety. Fearless, quick kids make great rushers. And rotate everyone early in the season: flag is the format where a kid discovers a position nobody predicted.

Frequently asked questions

What are the positions in 5v5 flag football?

Offense: a quarterback, a center who snaps and runs routes, and three receivers (one often plays as a running back). Defense: zone defenders and safeties, plus an optional rusher in leagues that allow one.

Can the quarterback run in flag football?

In most 5v5 leagues, no — the QB cannot cross the line of scrimmage on a run, though they can scramble behind it. Some 7v7 and local leagues differ, so check your rulebook.

What is the most important position in youth flag football?

Quarterback touches the ball every play, but the center is quietly critical — a clean snap and a reliable short route bail out more broken plays than anything else.
