Volleyball Rotation Explained (Beginner-Friendly, with Printable Sheet)

Nothing in youth sports confuses new coaches and parents faster than volleyball rotation. Six players, six zones, everyone sliding one spot at a mysterious moment, and a referee who somehow knows your lineup is illegal. Here is the whole system in plain English, plus a printable sheet with all six rotations drawn out.
The two rules that run everything
One: you rotate clockwise, one position, every time your team wins the serve back from the other team — called a side-out. Two: if your team keeps the serve, nobody moves; the same player keeps serving. That's it. Players do not rotate on every point, only when serve is regained.
The six zones

Rotation means moving 2 to 1, 1 to 6, 6 to 5, 5 to 4, 4 to 3, 3 to 2. The player who rotates into zone 1 becomes the new server. Write your serve order once and the whole match follows from it.
The overlap rule, in plain words
At the moment of serve, you must be in the right position relative to your neighbors — the zone 3 player can't be to the left of the zone 4 player, and a front-row player can't be behind their back-row neighbor. The instant the ball is served, everyone can go anywhere. Teach kids one cue: know who your neighbors are, stay on the correct side of them until the serve, then play volleyball.
Keep it simple for beginners
For a first-year team, skip specialized systems entirely: play where you stand, hit from wherever you rotate to, and just get the rotation order right. When your team is ready for a setter system, a 4-2 (setter always in the front row) is the gentlest step up. Save the 6-2 and 5-1 for when rotation itself is automatic.
