Baseball Score Sheet Template — preview of the free printable PDF from My-Team Sports
Preview of the free printable PDF — the download button is below.

Every youth baseball game needs someone keeping the book, and most of the time it is a parent who has never done it. The league's official scorebook stays with the league, the one your team bought is in somebody's trunk, and by the fourth inning nobody is sure who has how many outs. This printable fixes that with two pages: a proper scorebook page with a diamond for every at-bat, and a simple one-team sheet with the position numbers and symbols printed on it so a first-timer can score a game without a lesson. Print one of each per game.

First, learn the position numbers

Scorekeeping uses numbers instead of names for the fielders, and once you know them every symbol in the book makes sense. They are printed on page 2, but here they are: 1 pitcher, 2 catcher, 3 first base, 4 second base, 5 third base, 6 shortstop, 7 left field, 8 center field, 9 right field. A ground ball to the shortstop thrown to first is 6-3. A fly ball caught by the center fielder is F8. An error by the third baseman is E5. That is most of the book.

How to score an at-bat on the diamond

Each box on page 1 is one batter in one inning, and the little diamond inside it is the base paths. When the batter reaches base, draw the line from home to first and write how they got there under it (1B, BB, E6). As the runner advances, extend the line base by base. When they score, fill the diamond in — a filled diamond is a run, and the runs by inning row at the bottom is just a count of filled diamonds. When the batter makes an out, write the play in the box (K, 6-3, F8) and put the out number in the corner so you can see at a glance where you are in the inning.

The box score and the pitching line

At the end of the game, count across each row: at-bats, runs, hits, RBI, walks and strikeouts per batter go in the right-hand columns, and the totals row at the bottom should match the runs by inning. The pitching line is the part coaches actually ask for on Monday: innings pitched, hits, runs, earned runs, walks, strikeouts and the pitch count. If your league has pitch-count rules — most youth leagues do — that last column is the one that matters, and the pitch count tracker linked below has a slash-as-you-go strip so the number is right.

Common beginner mistakes

  • Forgetting to mark the out number. By the third out you will not remember whether the fly ball was the second or the third.
  • Scoring an error as a hit. If a fielder should have made the play, it is an E, and the batting averages are wrong all season if you get this backwards.
  • Losing the batting order after a substitution. Write the sub's name under the player they replaced in the same row — the row is the lineup spot, not the person.
  • Not reconciling at the end of the inning. Runs scored that half-inning should equal the filled diamonds. Fix it now, not in the car.

Score it live instead

The sheet is for the book. My-Team Sports is for everyone who isn't at the field. The live Scorekeeper runs from your phone one at-bat at a time — single, walk, strikeout, groundout, with a tap on the field for where the ball went — and parents who open your team's site see the score, the inning and who is up as it happens. Every at-bat rolls into the Stats tab, so AB, R, H, HR, RBI and batting average add up over the season without anyone typing them in on Monday. Print the sheet for the official book, score it live for the grandparents.

Frequently asked questions

How do you fill out a baseball score sheet?

Write the batting order down the left with positions. Each box is one batter in one inning. When the batter reaches base, draw the line to the base and write how (1B, BB, E6); extend the line as the runner advances and fill in the diamond when they score. When the batter makes an out, write the play (K, 6-3, F8) and the out number. At the end of each half-inning, write the runs in the runs-by-inning row.

What do the numbers mean in baseball scorekeeping?

Each fielder has a number: 1 pitcher, 2 catcher, 3 first base, 4 second base, 5 third base, 6 shortstop, 7 left field, 8 center field, 9 right field. A play is written as the fielders who touched the ball, so 6-3 is shortstop to first base and F8 is a fly ball caught by the center fielder.

What is the difference between K and a backwards K?

K is a strikeout swinging. A backwards K is a strikeout looking (called third strike). On this sheet, write K-L for looking so you don't have to draw the letter backwards.

How many innings are on the sheet?

Seven, which covers Little League (6), most youth leagues (6 or 7) and high school (7). If a game goes to extras, use the simple sheet on page 2 as the overflow or print a second copy.

Can a parent who has never kept score use this?

Yes — that is what page 2 is for. It has the position numbers and the common symbols printed on it, and the only instruction is to write what the batter did in the inning box and circle it if they scored.
