Every hockey coach builds the same sheet before every game, and most of them build it twice — once on a napkin at home and again on the locker room whiteboard because the napkin is in a coat pocket. This free printable line chart gives you four forward lines, three defensive pairs, and your goalies on one page, so the lines you thought about on Tuesday are the lines you actually roll on Saturday.
What is on the sheet
Four forward lines with a left wing, center, and right wing on each; three defensive pairs; and two goalie slots. Underneath there is room for a power play unit, a penalty kill unit, and notes — because the questions that actually cost you a game are "who is out there down a goal with a minute left?" and "who takes the draw in our own end?", and those get answered before warmups or not at all.
Building lines for a youth team
Resist the urge to stack a super line. At the youth level a top-heavy roster loses games in the second and third periods, because the fourth line you never developed has to play anyway. The version that holds up is balanced: spread your strongest skaters so every line has someone who can carry the puck out of the zone, and pair a steadier defender with a rangier one rather than putting both of your best on the same shift.
Centers matter more than wings at this age. A center who backchecks and can win a draw makes the other two players on that line look better, so start by picking your four centers, then build wings around them.
Roll your lines, do not match them
Line matching — chasing the other team's best players with your own — is a habit borrowed from watching pro hockey, and it is close to useless in youth leagues. It burns your top players out by the third period, it visibly benches everyone else, and it teaches your fourth line that they are there to fill time. Roll the lines in order and change every forty-five seconds or so. Short shifts and predictable rotation give you fresher legs late and far fewer parent conversations in the lobby.
If your league carries a minimum-play rule, the line chart is the document that proves you met it. Fill it in before the game and it is a plan; fill it in after, and it is a reconstruction.
