Soccer Substitution Rotation Planner (Equal Playing Time, Free Printable)

August 3, 2026

Every youth soccer coach has done it: it's the second half, you're trying to track the score, and somewhere in your head a spreadsheet is screaming that Maya has played 12 minutes and Jackson has played 40. The fix isn't better mental math — it's deciding the whole rotation before kickoff and subbing in waves. This free planner does the math part for you.

The equal-minutes math, once

FormatTypical gameRosterMinutes per kid
7v7 (U9-U10)50 min10 players35 min each
9v9 (U11-U12)60 min12 players45 min each
11v11 (U13+)70 min15 players~51 min each

Total minutes on the field equals game length times players on the field. Divide by roster size and that's what fair looks like. The planner's pre-worked pages turn that number into actual sub waves so you never have to derive it on a sideline again.

Sub in waves, not one at a time

Pick your sub marks — say every 8 minutes in a 7v7 game — and change two or three players at once, decided in advance. Wave subbing means each stoppage is one glance at the sheet, kids know when their turn is coming so nobody droops on the bench, and no single player gets stranded on the field or the bench because you got busy coaching.

Handle the goalkeeper on paper too

Keeper is the position parents watch closest. Rotate it by half at the younger ages so more kids learn the position, and note it on the sheet — a keeper half counts as playing time, but track field minutes separately so your keeper isn't shortchanged on touches. At older competitive levels, a dedicated keeper is fine; just make the plan visible.

Show the plan, kill the complaint

Most playing-time drama comes from surprise, not the minutes themselves. When the rotation is planned and visible, parents see the fairness instead of auditing it from the sideline. If you run your team on My-Team Sports, your roster and schedule already live on your team site — post the rotation plan with the game and the question answers itself before it gets asked.

Frequently asked questions

How often should you substitute in youth soccer?

In waves at set clock marks — every 7 to 10 minutes works for most youth games. Planned wave subs keep every kid moving, keep minutes fair automatically, and are far easier to run than reacting to whoever looks tired.

What is a fair amount of playing time in youth soccer?

At recreational ages, aim for equal: game minutes times players on the field, divided by roster size. A 50-minute 7v7 game with 10 players means about 35 minutes each. Many leagues also set a minimum, commonly half the game.

Should the goalkeeper rotate in youth soccer?

At younger ages, yes — rotating keeper by half lets more kids learn the position and keeps any one player from missing field development. Note keeper time on your rotation sheet so their field minutes stay fair too.
